The headline in the Oregonian says that the “U. S. is in an economic ’sinkhole.’”
Maybe so. But we went shopping today and faced frustration navigating around all the people pushing shopping carts around in the toy store. Bought only two items for over $50.00. We couldn’t find a close parking place to park in the mall. People in the parking lot were loading their trunks and walking back to the mall — for another load. It took a couple of red light cycles to get through each intersection because the roads around the mall was packed. In the lane next to me was one of those gimongous (I think that’s a word) pick-up trucks with the exhaust pipe nearly big enough to hide a bowing ball. It was idling away, just like the rest of us, gulping precious imported fossil fuel (we used to call it gas) while waiting for the light to change for a turn to move. There were ‘new car’ temporary license tags on the back window of the cab, and there was a brand new still-in-the-carton 52″ flat screen television in the bed of the truck.
In short, a lot of people have money to spend, and they are spending it.
They tell me Mr. Obama is going to fix this economic mess. And maybe he will.
